Packing Information

Travellers from the northern hemisphere need to be aware of the intensity of the sun in Australia. Even on overcast days ultraviolet rays can burn. Always wear protective cream, a wide brimmed hat and a long sleeved shirt with collar. The Outback can be very dry and dusty, and the temperature can drop quite dramatically at night. Dressing is mostly casual and practical and laundry facilities are nearly always available. The following is a general outline of what to pack:

Casual clothes for days 65 - 100°F (18°C - 38°C)
5-6 T-shirts or other short-sleeved shirts
1 bathing suit
2-3 pairs shorts
5-6 pairs underclothes and socks

Warm clothes for cooler nights 40°F - 60°F (5°C - 16°C)
1 warm jacket
1 jumper
I cotton turtleneck
2 long sleeve shirts
2 pairs casual pants
An outfit for dinner in Sydney if applicable
2 pairs comfortable walking shoes e.g. sandals and walking boots

Other Items:
Extra pair prescription glasses and sunglasses
Contact Lenses cleaning and wetting solutions are available in all cities and towns, but may not be the ones you are familiar with. Also, contacts are issued by prescription only.
Lotion, wash-n-drys, Kleenex, chap stick, eye drops, insect repellent (very important)
Personal cosmetics, toiletries
Hat, preferably wide brimmed and Sunscreen (very important)
Money belt o Any medication that you are taking, plus bandaids, antibiotic cream or liquid, burn cream, antihistamine cream for insect bites, medicine for diarrhoea, indigestion and paracetamol.

Users of electric shavers and hairdryers should note that voltage is 220-240V and plugs are 3 pin. Adapter plugs can be bought to suit Australian requirements.

When travelling on private charter planes, the weight limit per person is 22lbs and is strictly adhered to for safety reasons. Bring one medium to large size soft duffel bag (or two small to medium size duffel bags). Your carry-on should include your camera equipment and toiletries. So pack light for the Outback. City and resort wear can be stored at the main airport for these sections of your Australian adventure, or alternative arrangements can be made.
