Tyrconnell
Historic Gold Mine
Tropical North, Queensland
Concealed
amongst the timeless ranges of Far North Queensland is Tyrconnell
Historic Gold Mine, once bustling with activity but now a
secret from the world. This rugged land is rich in both European
and Aboriginal history and it is here that you will experience
the essence of Outback Australia.
Gold
discoveries in 1876 first lured European settlers to the area
via rough inland tracks. The population on the goldfield eventually
grew to 10000, necessitating coastal towns for easier access
to the area. The ports of Cairns and Port Douglas were soon
established and still thrive, while the goldfield is all but
deserted.
Your
hosts at the Tyrconnell Mine, Andrew Bell and Cate Harley
will recount the vision they had for the property sitting
upon the verandah of the abandoned cottage several years ago.
Andrew and his family mined the Tyrconnell in the 1980s until
the price of gold fell. Thoughts then turned to the enormous
task of restoring the 120-year-old mine, and he and Cate moved
into an old corrugated iron cottage on site and set to work.
Several
restored buildings, three heritage cottages and an enormous
amount of work later, they now share the magic of their outback
home with guests. You'll sit down to a sumptuous home cooked
dinner set amidst 1800's machinery, or under the stars of
the Southern Cross.
During
your stay experience the pounding of the vintage quartz-crushing
machine as Andrew coaxes it into action, or marvel at the
tenacity of the early settlers in Cate's cemetery interpretation.
Try your luck (and your patience!) at gold panning, spot an
elusive kangaroo, and take in the view across endless tree-studded
hills. Cate and Andy are registered wildlife carers and there
may be any number of injured or orphaned native animals in
residence. At Tyrconnell you are free to explore or simply
absorb the scents and sounds of the bush.
Rock.
Steeped in Aboriginal history and with a tragic coal mining
past, this magnificent 17km long sandstone bluff rises sharply
from the surrounding landscape, and is ideal for exploring.
You can also meet a local prospector (who might show you his
gold!), or learn how a didgeridoo is made and played from
George and Jim Archer, the traditional owners of Mount Mulligan.
Even try your hand at making your own didgeridoo with Andy!
Visit local industries such as sugar cane, coffee, mango and
tea tree farms in the area. Visit a true outback pub in "Cow
Town", or do a day trip to stunning underground caves or vast
wetlands. Learn about the local history, which is a tapestry
of Aboriginal, Italian, and many other diverse cultures. At
Tyrconnell you can be as adventurous or as relaxed as you
wish, the choice is always yours.
Tyrconnell
is a combination of ancient and colonial Australia in a setting
that typifies the spirit of the Australian Outback. It is
a rare opportunity to visit this infrequently explored part
of the world and to meet the people and live the life that
is synonymous with bush spirit.
